Of Embroidery
The technicalities of Embroidery are very simple and its tools few-- practically consisting of a needle, and nothing else. The work can be wrought loose in the hand, or stretched in a frame, which latter mode is often advisable, always when smooth and minute work is aimed at.
Wives and Stunners: The Pre-Raphaelites and Their Muses - Henrietta Garnett
Wives and Stunners: The Pre-Raphaelites and Their Muses [Hardcover]
Henrietta Garnett (Author)
Macmillan (30 Aug 2012)
Essentially a domestic biography whose main concern is the tragicomedy of manners enacted by a closely knit group of friends and lovers, Wives and Stunners tells the story of Janey Morris, Georgie Burne-Jones, Lizzie Siddall, Effie Gray and less well-known, Marie Spartali, Aglaia Coronio and Mary Zambacco. These women were the wives, mistresses andmuses, of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, the inspiration behind the work of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt, William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones and John Millais. Set against the background of mid-Victorian bohemian England, Henrietta Garnett vividly evokes the world they inhabited and the lives they lived. She recounts the romances and friendships between the artists and the 'stunners' in a lively and original way and her book will appeal to anyone interested in Victorian England, the history of the Pre-Raphaelites and, significantly, to everyone who wants to read a spellbinding story of a bygone era.
News From Nowhere inscription
News From Nowhere.
Morris, William.
Bookseller: The Kelmscott Bookshop
1 of 250 copies. Large paper edition of his most famous book. INSCRIBED BY MORRIS TO HIS ELDER DAUGHTER Jenny with William Morris' best love April 4th 1891. Jenny Morris (1861-1936) spent her life in ill health, suffering from epilepsy. She was extremely close to her father and never really recovered from his death in 1896. Inscribed copies of News From Nowhere are quite scarce. Outside of this copy, there have been only two inscribed copies to have sold at auction in the past 25 years - one to Burne-Jones and the other to Phillip Webb. News From Nowhere was Morris's famous Utopian novel, and it was an immediate success. The large paper copies were published at the same time as the first trade edition. An unauthorized and unedited version taken from a serial version published in 'Commonweal' was published by Roberts Brothers in Boston a few months before in 1890. The Kelmscott Press edition appeared in 1893. This copy is generally in very good condition. It is in the original dark blue boards with cream colored spine with paper title label. The spine is darkened, spotted, and bumped. The edges to the corners are also bumped but otherwise very good. There is browning to free endpapers which appears to be offsetting from something laid in. Hinges are holding tightly although they have pulled away in the middle as a result of opening the book flat. Light aging to untrimmed page edges and some margins, otherwise quite clean. There are no marks or flaws to the inscription page. 238 pages.

William Morris's Kelmscott: Landscape and History
Edited by Alan Crossley, Tom Hassall and Peter Salway
ISBN: ISBN-13: 978-1-905119-13-4 (hdbk); ISBN-13: 978-1-905119-14-1 pbk; 256pp, col and b/w ills

Kelmscott Manor is forever linked with the name of William Morris, pioneer conservationist and utopian socialist, designer and father of the Arts and Crafts tradition. The manor played a crucial role in shaping his thought: at the climactic moment of his futuristic novel, News from Nowhere, Morris lifts the latch of the Manors garden gate and finds his personal holy grail. Morris was drawn by the organic relationship between Kelmscott and its landscape: the linkage of stone walls and roof tiles to the geology and the soil, and the honest toil of the people to the agricultural cycle .
The fruits of the Kelmscott Landcape Project established in 1996 by the Society of Antiquaries of London, the owners of Kelmscott Manor today, this book is a multi-faceted examination of Kelmscotts history. Archaeology, from prehistory to the present day, the architectural development of the Manor before and after Morris knew it, and the art that the village and Manor have inspiredall received rich, illustrated coverage. The result is a vivid portrait of a Thames-side village transformed by its association with Morris, a book which demonstrates the rich connections between culture and landscape in a particular place.

Scenes from the Fall of Troy, by William Morris, handwritten by May Morris
Scenes from the Fall of Troy, by William Morris, handwritten by May Morris
Although she had been active in pursuing her own career in her 20s and 30s, in the latter half of her life May dedicated herself to her father's memory. She edited William Morris's complete works, a mammoth task. This book shows more what she did for fun - this poem was written out by her and bound as an 80th birthday present for Emery Walker.
