I was thinking about Raine's comments about Rossetti merging Lizzie and Jane together.
It might be assumed that Rossetti was thinking of his reunion with Lizzie, but his inner conflicts and complex feelings are displayed in the picture. The women in the background are all apparently modelled on Jane Morris, and it might be that Rossetti was considering whether Lizzie or Jane was his true 'conjugial' partner.
